A keratoma is a neoplasm on the skin, which consists of overgrown cells of the stratum corneum of the epithelium. The neoplasm looks like a plaque or nodule with a rough, scaly surface. Most often, keratomas form a large cluster and are located on open areas of the skin. In addition, these tumors can increase in size, which brings even more discomfort.
Causes of keratoma
- Ultraviolet radiation.
- Problems with the immune system.
- Genetic predisposition.
- Problems with neuroendocrine regulation.
- Lack of vitamin A.
- Oncology.
- Exposure of the skin to household chemicals, poisonous plant juice and other irritants.
TYPES OF KERATOMAS
Keratomas can be senile or age-related. The latter type of neoplasm is the most common. When the keratoma initially appears, it appears as a brown spot. However, as the spot grows, it becomes convex and loose, with scales on its surface. A senile keratoma can transform into a precancerous neoplasm – a cutaneous horn.
Seborrheic keratoma. This neoplasm first appears as light beige or brown spots. But after a long time, the neoplasm becomes covered with flaky scales. Subsequently, these spots increase in size and can merge with each other. As the keratomas grow, they begin to thicken and crusts appear, which subsequently exfoliate and crack.
Horny keratoma or cutaneous horn. This is a dense neoplasm that can reach several centimeters in size, including height. An inflammatory rim is visible on the skin along its perimeter. Keratomas of this type are prone to malignant transformation.
Follicular keratoma. Most often, this tumor appears in women and is located around the hair follicles. Keratomas of this type are convex light pink or light gray nodes surrounded by a pink ring with a rough surface. The size of the neoplasm can reach 1.5 centimeters, and in the center there may be a funnel-shaped cavity.
Keratoma removal method.
The most effective method for removing keratomas is with the help of the CO2Re Candela laser device. In some cases, we may use the GentleMax Pro Candela Alexandrite laser. In both cases, laser exposure is the most advanced way to get rid of the tumor. In addition, the procedure minimizes the risk of keratoma recurrence. The laser removes tumors instantly and does not affect healthy skin.
Indications for removal.
- Bleeding from the neoplasm.
- Repeated damage to the keratoma by clothing.
- Noticeable cracks on the neoplasm.
- Significant and rapid growth of the tumor.
- Regular exposure to ultraviolet light.
- Genetic predisposition.
Contraindications to the procedure:
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Suspicion of malignancy of the neoplasm
- Risk of keloid scars
- Diabetes
- Problems with the cardiovascular system
- Epilepsy
Preparing for removal.
The procedure is carried out on the day of the visit and does not require special preparation. Before the session, the doctor will conduct an examination and perform a dermatoscopy to study the keratoma. If no malignant cells are found during the examination, the doctor will proceed to remove the keratoma.
Post-procedure care:
- Rehabilitation takes up to 2 weeks and is almost unnoticeable.
- On days 7-9 after the session, a slight itching may be felt due to the peeling of the recently formed crust.
Instructions for the first day after removal of the tumor:
- The treated site must not get wet
- Do not peel off the crust that has appeared on the treated site
- Do not expose the treated site to ultraviolet light
- Refrain from swimming anywhere and visiting a bathhouse or a tanning salon for 1 month
Advantages of the procedure at the Era Esthetic Avenue medical center using CO2 laser:
- High level of safety
- Quick results
- No side effects
- No pain
- No blood
- Short recovery period
Keratomas come in different types. The most common ones are non-dangerous keratomas that do not hurt and do not create any problems other than the esthetic discomfort. However, there are also dangerous neoplasms that can lead to cancer.
It can be treated, but it cannot be cured. Keratomas are removed in a medical center. A laser is used for this. The doctor does this carefully and painlessly.
Usually 1 procedure is enough, but if there are multiple keratomas on the body, another procedure might be necessary.
In most cases, pain relief is not necessary. The CO2 laser is highly accurate, ensuring minimal damage to healthy tissue.
